Ukranian Garlic Price Soars

lol.org.ua reports on the high price of garlic in the Ukraine. In June the wholesale price was between USD 0.6 and 0.8 per kilo. The price has now reached between USD 1.4 and 2.0 per kilo.

This price increase is put down mainly to an increase in demand from the Ukrainian food industry, in particular the new canneries.

lol predicts that Ukraine could import more garlic from neighbours Poland and China, however they note that Chinese garlic is not considered suitable for some traditional Ukranian recipes.

Gilroy Garlic Festival Association to Relocate Headquarters

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association (GFA) will be moving its headquarters.

The GFA has reportedly agreed a land-swap deal with the city council. The GFA will take over a public parking lot in Monterey Street, in exchange for which it will give the council its current parking lot at Eigleberry Street plus a cash sum.

The non-profit GFA, which organises the Gilroy's annual garlic festival, plans to build a new headquartes on the site.

The land swap was agreed despite objections from some local traders concerned about the timing of the plan and the loss of downtown parking space.

White Rot Hits Really Garlicky Company

Scotland's renowned Really Garlicky Company has been seriously hit by an outbreak of White Rot. The fungus was first spotted on the stems of imported Canadian garlic and half the crop was soon lost.

The Really Garlicky Company are importing to fill the gap. They have sourced pink 'Rose de Lautrec' garlic from the Tarn region of Southern France.

Their own Patagonian Purple garlic should be available in January.
